CAN UVC HELP PREVENT COVID-19 TRANSMISSION BY REDUCING CONTAMINATION?

The International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) believes that UV disinfection technologies can play a role in a multiple barrier approach to reducing the transmission of the virus causing COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, based on current disinfection data and empirical evidence. UV is a known disinfectant that can help to mitigate the risk of acquiring an infection in contact with the COVID-19 virus when applied correctly.

UVC light has been used extensively for more than 40 years in disinfecting drinking water, waste water, air, pharmaceutical products, and surfaces against a whole suite of human pathogens. All bacteria and viruses tested to date (many hundreds over the years, including other coronaviruses) respond to UV disinfection. Some organisms are more susceptible to UVC disinfection than others, but all tested so far do respond at the appropriate doses.

Luxibel UVC purification lamp systems provide a safe, reliable and sustainable solution. Ideal for use in ventilation air ducts, air disinfection units or stand-alone air purifiers. These types of UVC purification systems from Luxibel can also be used for surface disinfection in the food and beverage industries, hospital rooms, retirement homes, shops, offices and meeting rooms, surface disinfection in public transport like buses, elevators etc. They help protect against airborne pathogens, creating a safer and healthier indoor environment with the power of light. Luxibel UVC products are made in Europe with high-quality Philips light sources.

The focus is on luminaires featuring direct, indirect and hybrid UVC lighting. The B Direct & B Direct II use direct radiation while the B Air focuses on indirect air purification. The B Hybrid combines direct and indirect radiation. All direct-radiating fixtures have a standard double security with a moving sensor and an alarm LED light and beeper. A broad-scale of accessories are also available, such as mounting arms, wireless control units, active carbon air filters and spare UVC lamps.

The units with direct UVC light can only be activated in areas where no physical persons are present during the disinfection process. UVC radiation is harmful to human skin and eyes. Hans Vanderheijden of Luxibel explains: "The appliances with direct lighting can only disinfect unpopulated spaces, for example before and after office or opening hours or during intermittent breaks. But we are also launching a variant where the UVC light sources are enclosed in a housing through which air flows. As a result, the ambient air is disinfected safely and the device can remain activated 24/7 without being harmful to humans.

UVC on the front line in the fight against Covid-19

Though there hasn’t been any research looking at how UVC affects Covid-19 specifically, studies have shown that it can be used against other coronaviruses, such as Sars. The radiation warps the structure of their genetic material and prevents the viral particles from making more copies of themselves. As a result, a concentrated form of UVC is now on the front line in the fight against Covid-19.

UV light to disinfect public buses

Ultraviolet (UV) rays are being used to disinfect public buses in Shanghai. A transport firm in the Chinese port city installed UV lights in a cleaning bay. This new disinfection method only takes 5-7 minutes for one bus.
