The International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA) believes that UV disinfection technologies can play a role in a multiple barrier approach to reducing the transmission of the virus causing COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, based on current disinfection data and empirical evidence. UV is a known disinfectant that can help to mitigate the risk of acquiring an infection in contact with the COVID-19 virus when applied correctly.

UVC light has been used extensively for more than 40 years in disinfecting drinking water, waste water, air, pharmaceutical products, and surfaces against a whole suite of human pathogens. All bacteria and viruses tested to date (many hundreds over the years, including other coronaviruses) respond to UV disinfection. Some organisms are more susceptible to UVC disinfection than others, but all tested so far do respond at the appropriate doses.

The units with direct UVC light can only be activated in areas where no physical persons are present during the disinfection process. UVC radiation is harmful to human skin and eyes. UVC on the front line in the fight against Covid-19

Though there hasn’t been any research looking at how UVC affects Covid-19 specifically, studies have shown that it can be used against other coronaviruses, such as Sars. The radiation warps the structure of their genetic material and prevents the viral particles from making more copies of themselves. As a result, a concentrated form of UVC is now on the front line in the fight against Covid-19.

UV light to disinfect public buses

Ultraviolet (UV) rays are being used to disinfect public buses in Shanghai. A transport firm in the Chinese port city installed UV lights in a cleaning bay. This new disinfection method only takes 5-7 minutes for one bus.
